DOVIE KEMP STEWART
1921-2009
Dovie Stewart, 88 of Jay, FL, left us to be with our Lord Monday morning, April 27, 2009 during a brief stay in a local hospital.
Mrs. Stewart was born February 9, 1921 in Jay and was a life long resident. She was an active charter member of New Bethel Baptist Church, where she was the church clerk and taught for many years. She was a retired teacher of Santa Rosa County. She taught elementary school for 43 years, all at Chumuckla except the first 2 years at Cross Roads.
Mrs. Stewart was preceded in death by her husband, Elmer Stewart; her parents, Issac N. and Mary H. Kemp of Jay; her brothers, Russell Odell Kemp and Reuben L. Kemp; and sister, Vona B. Jernigan.
Survivors to cherish her memory are sons, Wayland (Anne) Stewart of North Carolina and Wayne (Ann) Polk of Jay, FL; grandchildren, Julie (Charlie) Pride of Kentucky, Wesley E. Stewart of North Carolina, Cassandra (Cody) Emmett and Clay Polk, both of Jay; great-grandchildren, Emily and Will Pride, Wyatt and Jack Stewart; sister, Ellie B. Hall of Mobile, AL; several nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
Special thanks to the compassionate staff of Jay Hospital and Virginia Bankich.
Arrangements and visitation at Jay Funeral Home, Wednesday, 6 p.m.-9 p.m. Services: Thursday, 11 a.m., New Bethel Baptist Church; Burial: Cora Cemetery with Rev. Matthew Dobson officiating.
Pall bearers will be Larry Hall, Clayton Stewart, Preston Tucker, Jimmy Arnett, Frank Lowery, and Curt Lowery.

A little story about “Ms Dovie”—but first a little background. I am a graduate of CHS ’63, thus I was in her 4th grade class approx 1955. After graduation 2 years at PJC, BS from Troy State , USNR/OCS for active duty on a DD (to be emulated later by your brother), marriage, kids, career, etc. Ended up in Clearwater , Florida approx 22 years ago.
Now enters into my bio “Ms Dovie.” Approx 10 years ago in early December Sandra and I returned home after Xmas shopping to find a phone message from this old lady’s unmistakable North Florida voice inquiring if “this was the home of Tommy Richarme.” It was indeed Mrs Stewart—my first thought was “Oh God—I will return the note pad I stole from Robert Burgess….please don’t send me to Mr. Temple ’s office!” Actually, her son Waylon (make that Dr Waylon Stewart PhD) lived in Clearwater and worked for Honeywell. She was in town for a visit—Sandra and I picked her up for a long 40+ year catch up dinner—it was a lovely time and one that I will cherish. (seems to me that she must have been about 120 years old or so even then).
As a post script—seems that Dr Stewart is a world renowned expert in the effects of radiation on circuitry of satellites. When I would mention to some of my Honeywell engineer friends that Waylon’s mom was my 4th grade teacher, they would invariably respond (with no small amount of awe in their voices “you know DR. STEWART…??)
Mrs. Stewart taught Moma and Daddy in the eight grade and Brenda, Donnie, Sandra and I in the forth grade at Chumuckla.
We will miss her.
