James Willard Davis, 1930-2016

James Willard Davis

James Willard Davis, 86, of Chumuckla, passed away on Friday, March 25, 2016. Willard was born near Jay, FL on March 4, 1930 to S.S. and Mary Etta Davis. He worked at the Experiment Station for 6 years before going to Monsanto, where he retired after 31 years. A lover of the outdoors, Willard was proud of his extensive gardens, especially his tomatoes, and loved to share his crops with family
and friends. He was also a long-time member of Calvary Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by: his parents; his son, Donnie; and his sister and brother-in-law, Essye and David Wyman. He is survived by: his wife of 69 years, Miriam; his children, Brenda (Larry) Gillman, Sandra Neal, and Doug Davis; five grandchildren: Tony (Pika) White, Donna White, Leslie (Pete) Zielinski, Sandra (Tony) Kuhl, and Gordon Gillman; five great-grandchildren: Davis and Ethan White, Tony and Taylor Kuhl, and Elizabeth Gillman; one great-great granddaughter, Brelynn Kuhl; two sisters-in law, Gwen (Burt) Riddles and Gwendolyn Enfinger; one brother-in-law, Wilton (Nola) Enfinger; and many nieces and nephews. MANY thanks to Pat Noles, who was his caregiver for 3 ½ years. Trahan Family Funeral Home of Milton is charge of arrangements. Visitation will be held from 10:00 am until funeral services begin at 11:00 am at Calvary Baptist Church in Allentown on Tuesday, March 29, 2016 with Brother LaDon Hall, assisted by Brother Dustin Lambert, officiating. Burial will follow at the church cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Florida Baptist Children’s Homes, 1000 Chemstrand Rd. Cantonment, FL 32533.

"Aunt" Mary

Mary Elizabeth “Aunt Mary” Howell Dawson, 72, left this world on March 7, 2016 to be with her lord Jesus Christ. She was born in Chumuckla, FL. She attended Chumuckla school where she earned a nursing scholarship. She then served 36 years at Chemstrand/Monsanto. She also ran Aunt Mary’s Country Store where she loved keeping her family and friends fed. She definitely lived her life for her children and grandchildren.
Mary was preceded in death by her parents, Harry and Margaret Howell; brother, Bobby “George” Howell; and the father of her children, Gerald “Doc” Dawson.
Mary leaves behind a daughter, Stephanie (Mike) McClendon; son, Darin (Lori) Dawson; ex-daughter-in-law, Tabatha Salter Mayo; 5 grandsons: Troy Dawson, Brett Williams, Valente’ McDougal, Tres’ Dawson, and Brendan McClendon; great-granddaughters, Berkleigh McClendon and Tianna Turner; 2 sisters, Brenda (Tommy) Bozeman and Ann (Roger) Cobb; brother, Samuel (Carol) Howell and many nieces and nephews.
Pallbearers will be Brett Williams, Tres’ Dawson, Nick Waters, Christian Howell, Gaige Wilkinson, Brandon Wilkinson, Wyatt Kozell and Kris Noa.
Honorary pallbearers will be Sam Howell, Steve Bozeman, Marcus Brannon, David Kelley, Jerry Cassady, Tommy Smith, Vic Campbell, Steve Oreskovich, Paul Wilkinson, Jeff Pinyon, Tim Smith and Brian Parker.
The family wishes to thank family, friends, and Emerald Coast Hospice for their care and concern during this difficult time.

Funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, March 12th at Chumuckla Community Church (Elizabeth Chapel) with Wayne Stevens and Tom Sharron officiating. Visitation will be held prior to the service, at 1:00 p.m. Burial will follow at Elizabeth Chapel Cemetery.

Joseph Edward Hawthorne - 1932-2016

Ed Hawthorne of Chumuckla passed away Monday January 18. He and his wife, Ruth founded the corner store in Chumuckla, which today operates as a Tom Thumb. The notice from the Pensacola News Journal is posted here for information. Arrangements are not yet completed as travel plans develop. An obituary will be posted here when available. Our condolences and prayers are with Ruth and her family in this difficult time.

Joseph Edward Hawthorne, 84, of Chumuckla died Monday, Jan. 18, 2016. Trahan Family Funeral Home of Milton is directing.

Mr. Joseph Edward Hawthorne, 84, of the Chumuckla community, died on Monday January 18, 2016. He was born in Jay, on January 16, 1932; son of the late James Hawthorne and Mattie Lee (Bass) Hawthorne. He was the husband of Ruth (Barley) Hawthorne.

Edward served in the United States Army during the Korean War. He was a franchise owner of Gordon Potato Chip (co-owned with his wife), Sunshine Grocery in Brownsdale and One Stop Bait and Tackle in Chumuckla, FL. He enjoyed, hunting, fishing and flea markets.

He was preceded in death by: sons, Chester Hawthorne and Jeffery Hawthorne; brothers, Aubrey and Ray; and sister, Betty Nowling.

Survivors include: his wife; his daughters, Diane (John) Marceau, and Cynthia Bloyd; daughter in law, Shirley Hawthorne; grandchildren: Kevin (Jessica) Carroll, Sean (Ashley) Carroll, Joseph (Erin) Bloyd, Joshua Hawthorne, and Tony Pierson; great granddaughter, Vada Victoria Carroll; great-grandson, A.J Pierson; sisters, Loretta (Tommy) McCory, Irene Joyner, and Ann Blanton; brother, James E. Hawthorne, Jr.; and many nieces and nephews. 

Funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, January 27, 2016 at the Chumuckla Community United Methodist Church, with Pastor Tom Sharon officiating. Burial will follow in the Elizabeth Chapel Community Cemetery. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service.

Dear Neighbors,

The following newsletter is provided to the community to inform you of any decisions or changes that have taken place with our local cemetery.

In or around 1938 Mr. Jim Pace of the Pace Company donated 40 acres to the community of Chumuckla for a church and cemetery. The church was given the name of Elizabeth Chapel as a memorial to Elizabeth Jernigan, a dear friend to the Pace family. Many changes have taken place since then. READ THE FULL REPORT HERE.

Samuel Peacock II was my 5th Great Grandfather. He was a soldier in the Militia for North Carolina. I have had soldiers in this country since it began and beyond in England all the way back to Jerusalem. There is a long lineage of service to our country, and its people in my family.

There is a very cute story about Samuel and General George Washington who wanted to pass his toll bridge free of charge. Samuel told him he would have to pay like anyone else. That guy had something I tell ya!
