Duke Lamar Campbell 1922 - 2006
Duke Lamar Campbell, 83, died at home, May 17, 2006 after a long battle with Alzheimer's disease.
Lamar was born in Pace, Florida in 1922. His parents moved to Chumuckla in 1932.
After his graduation from high school (Chumuckla School), he joined the Navy and served mostly in the Philippines during World War II. He and Frances Manning married in 1948 at First Baptist Church in Pensacola, FL. He retired from the Navy after 22 years of service. He traveled to Europe, China and served 2 years in Japan with his young family. They also lived in California, Tennessee, Georgia, Virginia, and South Carolina and Florida during his Navy career.
He loved his family and the land in Chumuckla. The summer of 1960, he was stationed at Pensacola Naval Air Station and he moved his family to Chumuckla. During his last tour of duty in Norfolk, VA, he commuted most weekends to be with his family.
He and Frances built a house on the land that has been in the family for three generations and that is where he died. He drew much pleasure from riding the tractor, harvesting hay and taking care of his cows, just as his father had done. After retirement from the Navy, he helped start and worked part time for the Chumuckla Water System. His truck could be seen daily at the "Pump House" as he insured the quality of the water. He retired from the Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation Service after 18 years. He flew in small planes taking aerial photos of Santa Rosa County and Texas for the ASCS. He traveled all of Santa Rosa County and knew every back road and farmer. He had a profound appreciation for the land, trees and nature which he taught to his daughters and grandchildren. He was a member and past treasurer of Chumuckla United Methodist Church and was active for many years in the Chumuckla Ruritan Club.
Lamar is survived by his wife of 58 years, Frances; daughters and sons-in-law, Faye and Dave Westfall of Gainesville, GA and Kittye and Winston Norris of Pace, FL; grandchildren, Kristen Westfall and Spencer Minch, Kimberly and Kevin Enns, Kate Westfall, Kyle and Brandy Norris and Kurt Norris; sister and brother-in-law, Elizabeth and Olyn Matthews; sister-in-law, Myrtle Campbell; and many wonderful nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his brother, J. Lee Campbell and his mother and father, Dessie and Jim Campbell.
The family is very grateful to Tryllis Kilpatrick, who daily provided love, care and comfort to Lamar and Frances. We appreciate Leo Nichols and Bonnie Haye, who were always ready to come when we needed them.
The family will receive friends and family at Chumuckla United Methodist Church from 3:00-4:00 p.m., Friday, May 19, 2006. The service will begin at 4 p.m. with the Rev. Clive Knights officiating. Burial will follow at Elizabeth Chapel Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to Chumuckla United Methodist Church Building Fund.
Arrangements are under the direction of DONNIE SOWELL FUNERAL HOME.

Mr. Joe Burch Has Back Problem
A few years ago, Dad and I stopped by to visit with the Burches on the "Old Spanish Trail". Here is a photo. I just got word Mr. Buch has a real problem with his back. Norma Jean has recently taken up modern miracles and uses email. If you have a chance, send them a note of encouragement to: Normajean1030@aol.com. Hope you like the photo.
Claud Davis
I just thought I'd post this photo of Mr. Claud Davis of Allentown. He is about 97 years old. This photo was made in 2002. The house he lives in was built about 1840. He still runs a herd of cattle and chops his own wood. Claud was in the US Navy from 1926 to 1946 having served mainly in the Asiatic Fleet prior to WWII and of course serving throughout WWII. My Dad who was 82 at the time took me by to visit Mr. Davis. Dad died about a year or so later. You can learn more about the Asiatic Fleet HERE. I have some video of this visit which includes a lot of his memorabilia from the Navy. I hope to soon include this footage and a number of other interviews with Asiatic Fleet Sailors in a single DVD soon. Another story from the Asiatic Fleet is in the film about the USS Houston.

Vic's Christmas Letter
We offer our very best wishes for you and yours this holiday season. Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays and Happy New Year. This is our famly "Christmas Letter" for 2005.Alex is 14 now and enjoys playing Lacrosse. He enjoys sports activity and has recently taken an interest in physical conditioning with weights. You can't tell from this picture, but he is 6' tall ( 2" shorter than Vic). Alex is now a freshman in High School. He most enjoys his History classes. French is his language of choice to study and he is beginning to make some headway. Oui! Karen enjoys her challenging work with ISI. Travel has not been intensive the later part of 2005 - but there are conference calls/net meetings all the time - early and late - to accomodate worldwide team members. Getting "Marsians" from around the world to use the same computer system isno small endeavor (different languages, cultures and laws). Vic has a number of media projects underway. This "video blog" is one of them. Our families in Hurricane Alley are relatively dried out and in reasonable repair now (Ivan and Dennis). We wish there was more time to visit our families "down home" as parents and other family squarely face the the affects of age. A number of cousins and friends, or their children are directly involved with our nation's efforts in the Middle East. We pray for their safety and that their efforts will allow peace to have a chance to bloom for the people in that region of the world.
Here are some more links. ME3TV (a means to present local TV programming without any dependence on cable television). Currently there are two video blogs there; INCOUNTRY and Eggzono973. Under "Incountry" I posted my nieces singing a Christmas song for you. They are also posted at DAILYMOTION.com singing Tiptoe Through The Tulips. They are funny! You may remember the Snowfall video Vic did few years ago. It is now a DVD. Segments from it are now put to poetry by fellow entrepreneur, MJ Trenkler of Jacksonville, FL. One is posted on this page. Enjoy the snow! This year, we are mailing cards to our family and friends without internet access. I hope you don't mind! Here comes 2006!
Our best wishes to all of you, Vic, Karen and Alex.
