Obituary - Jack Matchett

Jack E. Matchett, 68, of Chumuckla, passed away on Sunday, February 5, 2006 in a local hospital. He was born in Monroe County, AL on March 11, 1937. He was preceded in death by his parents, Lee and Ruby Matchett of Excel, Al.
Mr. Matchett owned Matchett General Construction Company, a utility construction company, since 1978, until his recent retirement. He attended Christian Life Church in Milton. He served four years aboard aircraft carriers in the U.S. Navy.
Mr. Matchett is well known for his great love of sports, especially football and basketball, and throughout the years he was an encouragement to many athletes in Santa Rosa County, including his children and grandchildren. He was known for telling athletes to 'get an education.' He also sponsored several local teams over the years. When attending Excel High School in Alabama, he himself achieved All-State status for both football and basketball, and attended Auburn University, where he played freshman football.
Mr. Matchett is survived by his wife of 47 years, Ramona "Pat"; daughter, Debbie Marchett-Ioakim, and her husband, Chris; son, Ross Matchett; and daughter, Diane Lea. Grandsons are Joey and Brandon Caraway and granddaughters are Skyler and Summer Matchett, and Christa and Brittany Ioakim. One great-grandson is Tyler Caraway, son of Joey Caraway. Mr. Matchett is also survived by his brother, Aubrey Matchett; and three sisters, Margaret Miller, Jacqueline English and Arthurene Blalock; and many special cousins as well as nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Wednesday, February 8, 2006 at Donnie Sowell Funeral Home. Funeral services will be 10:00 a.m. Thursday, February 9, 2006 at Donnie Sowell Funeral Home with the Rev. Clive Knight. Interment will be 2:00 p.m. at Oak Grove Assembly of God Cemetery in Excel, AL.
Active pallbearers include Johnny Rogers, Buddy Powell, Jason Brewton, Joe Grimes, Mike Stewart and Tony McDonald. Honorary pallbearers include Billy Kimbrough, Carlos Campbell, Wayne Jernigan, Jim Kimbrough, Norman Walther, Don Salter and Robert Freedom.
DONNIE SOWELL FUNERAL HOME in Milton is in charge of arrangements.
